Alternative 3 has been chosen by NCDOT.

Quite a bit of behind the scenes work has been going on between NCDOT and the various stakeholders of this bypass.  This has delayed the much anticipated corridor decision.  I understand the frustration people are feeling, however the impacts of this new road will be large.  Hopefully a final decision will be made by Spring 2010.

Alternatives 4 & 6 were eliminated from consideration. Alternatives 3 and 74a are still being considered at this time.

The draft Enviromental Impact Statement has been prepared.  There is a copy of it at IPDC's office in Rutherfordton.  If you would like to view it please come by between 8:30 AM and 5 PM Monday thru Friday.  Special arrangements can be made outside of normal business hours.  For more information please contact Josh King  by email or 828-287-2281 x1264.

By popular demand the corridor map is now online.  The file is quite large so it may take a moment or two to load.  If you have any question please contact Josh King. 

Project Update: 8/25/08

We expect the state draft Environmental Impact Statement for the project to be approved this month.

The hearing for the project will probably be held by the end of the year or early next year.

We expect to select a preferred alternative in March 2009. 

We will then have a second public meeting sometime in 2009. 

Right of way acquisition is scheduled for fiscal year 2011 and construction in fiscal year 2014.

An official public meeting will be held sometime late this year or early next year on the bypass project. Meanwhile you can view the maps of the proposed routes in Spindale Town Hall, Rutherfordton Town Hall, and Isothermal Planning and Development Commission in Rutherfordton.
